You sent the first message and got a reply. Now what? Running out of things to say is the number one reason a promising chat fizzles. The trick isn't a list of prepared questions — it's knowing which kinds of topics tend to go somewhere.
Topics that almost always work
- Right now. What they're doing, listening to, eating, watching. Easy, current, and real.
- Their place. Where they're chatting from and what it's like. With the distance filter on Chat AHOY, you may be surprised how close (or far) that is.
- Small opinions. Best pizza topping, worst chore, morning or night person. Low stakes, high reply rate.
- Plans. Anything they're looking forward to this week or this year.

Closed questions get one-word answers. Try these shapes instead:
- "What's the story behind…?"
- "How did you get into…?"
- "Free weekend, no obligations — what do you do?"
- "What surprises people when they get to know you?"
And answer your own questions too. A conversation is an exchange, not a quiz.
Getting past small talk
At some point one of you says something slightly more personal: a frustration, a plan, a memory. Follow it. Ask one more question about that instead of changing the subject. That's the moment a chat becomes a conversation.
Save these for later (or never)
- Money and possessions. Reads as bragging or fishing.
- Anything sexual. Against the house rules, and the fastest way to end a chat.
- Politics and religion, at least early on. There's a time for these; the first ten minutes with a stranger isn't it.

When you're stuck
