How to spot scams and fake profiles in a chat

The overwhelming majority of people on Chat AHOY are real and here for the same reason you are. Moderation checks profile photos and steps in when the rules are broken, but nobody is identity-verified — so a little scepticism is part of the deal. Knowing the common patterns means you spot them in the first five minutes instead of the first five days.

The scripts worth knowing

The fast romance. Intense compliments and talk of a "connection" within minutes. It's flattering by design. Real interest builds over conversations, not messages.

The off-platform push. "I'm barely on here, add me on [other app]." The goal: get you somewhere with no moderation and no report button. Someone who enjoys talking to you will happily keep talking here.

The emergency. A sick relative, a stuck parcel, a bank problem — could you help, just this once? Never send money, gift cards or codes to someone you met in a chat. No exceptions.

The webcam trap. They turn on their camera, encourage you to do the same and to do something explicit, then threaten to share the recording. Report immediately and don't pay; paying only brings more demands. Nudity and sexual content break the house rules anyway, so the request itself is the red flag.

The link. "Check out my pics here" plus a URL. Don't click links from people you don't know.

Tells that a profile may not be real

  • A profile photo that looks like a stock image or a model.
  • Replies that don't match your questions, or arrive suspiciously fast and generic.
  • Refusing a quick video call while claiming to be very keen. (Shyness is real, but combined with other tells it's telling.)
  • A story whose details shift between messages.

What to do

  1. Stop sharing. No personal details, no photos, no money.
  2. Report. Use the report button in the chat. Reports are reviewed within a few minutes, 24 hours a day, and accounts that break the rules are blocked.
  3. Close the chat. You owe nobody an explanation.

Already sent money? Contact your bank right away. Being blackmailed? Contact the police. Both see these cases all the time and know what to do.

How Chat AHOY helps

Profile photos are moderated (a real face, an adult, nothing against the rules), photos in chats are checked before delivery, and the minimum age is enforced. What Chat AHOY doesn't do is verify anyone's identity, so a video call is the most reliable way to confirm someone is who they say they are. None of this replaces your own judgement — it just tilts the odds in your favour. For more, see staying safe while chatting online and the safety center.
