One of the things that sets Chat AHOY apart from a random chat is that you can choose to meet people close by. Shared surroundings make conversation easy, and a chat that opens with "wait, you're in the same city?" tends to go somewhere. Here's how location works under the hood and how to keep it under your control.
How your location is determined
Chat AHOY works out your location automatically from your device or internet connection. It's an approximation, not a GPS pin, and it's used for two things: the maximum distance filter and the world map.
The distance filter
On the discover page you set how far away the people you meet can be. Small radius for local chats; widen it when things are quiet. Distance is calculated between approximate locations, so treat the numbers as rough.
The world map
The world map shows who's online right now. Positions are intentionally fuzzy and not everyone is shown, to protect privacy. It's a great way to see where the activity is at this hour before you set your filters. With PLUS you can open profiles straight from the map.
Choosing or changing your location
In your location settings you can pick a preferred location instead of the detected one. With PLUS you can set a completely custom location — useful if you're about to travel, want to practise a language, or are just curious about another city.
Opting out
You can choose not to appear on the world map at all. The distance filter still works for you.
Local chats: a few habits
Chatting with someone nearby is fun, and it raises the privacy stakes a little. So:
- Talk about your neighbourhood, not your street.
- Keep your workplace and daily routine to yourself early on.
- If you decide to meet, pick a busy public place and tell someone.

Off-peak hours and rural areas can be quiet. Widen the distance, try the world map, or come back in the evening when most people are online. The home page shows how many people are online right now.
